The Polish Association of the Deaf (PZG) is the oldest and largest non-governmental organization in Poland working on behalf of deaf and hard-of-hearing people. The organization has been active continuously since 1946, serving as both the inheritor and continuer of the traditions and ideological and rehabilitative legacy of the Polish Union of Deaf-Mute Societies, which emerged from the unification of the social movement of the deaf that had existed since 1876.
The objectives of the Polish Association of the Deaf are to bring together, rehabilitate, and empower deaf people and others with hearing impairments, as well as to integrate them into the hearing community; to jointly solve problems; and to work toward equalizing opportunities for development, education, employment, and social participation.
The Association is also a member of numerous external associations, groups, and initiatives in Poland and abroad. The organization also participates in government and consultative activities concerning the rights of people with disabilities, where it represents the voices of its deaf members on issues important to them, such as the recognition of Polish Sign Language (PJM), social benefits, and increasing accessibility in various areas of life.
The Association has approximately 20,000 members across Poland, and its structure includes 15 provincial branches, 240 local branches and extended groups, 17 specialized hearing and speech rehabilitation clinics, 4 medical companies, and 2 production facilities.
